Cooking with Fire Workshops Heat Up at Evergreen Brick Works

TORONTO, ONTARIO (June 8, 2023) – Torontonians looking to step up their backyard barbeque or campfire creations can look no further than the Cooking with Fire Culinary Workshops running from June to November at Evergreen Brick Works. From flamed-grilled cumin lamb skewers to coal-roasted potatoes with chimichurri, participants will learn time-honoured culinary techniques enjoyed around the world.

The series kicks off with two workshops led by chef, instructor, speaker and activist Joshna Maharaj, whose passion for gastronomy is driven by her love of hospitality, sustainability and social justice.

“Mastering cooking over an open flame connects us to an essential human experience: simple ingredients, heat, and being outdoors,” says Chef Maharaj. “I’m thrilled to be leading culinary workshops at Evergreen Brick Works in a space that reminds us to appreciate the beauty of these fundamental building blocks.”

The other workshops are led by award-winning chefs like Joseph Shawana, an Odawa chef, professor, and culinary advisor whose cooking infuses classical French techniques with Indigenous cuisine; Tawfik Shehata, an Egyptian-born chef and educator who has led some of the country’s most highly rated kitchens; and Bashir Munye, a chef and whose cuisine is inspired by his Somali heritage, Italian upbringing, and passion for sustainability and food justice.

Tickets for this culinary event can be purchased on Eventbrite. Proceeds from the event will support free community programming offered year-round at Evergreen Brick Works.

This workshop series is presented in partnership with Quell, a purpose-driven talent agency that proudly represents a collective of exceptional underrepresented food, drink, fitness and lifestyle leaders and experts.
