The Brick Works needs your help

On July 16, Toronto experienced record-breaking rainfall (over100 mm) that caused widespread flash flooding across the city. Evergreen Brick Works was among the places that were hit. Though we were built to withstand some flooding, the sheer amount of water still made an impact. It is clear that a full recovery will be a multi-million dollar effort.

The Brick Works, dubbed ‘Toronto’s backyard’ by community members, provides great public programming and a natural oasis in the heart of the city all year round. From weekly Farmers Markets that support hundreds of local vendors to outdoor play and recreation for kids and families, it is truly a magical spot. Now it needs your support.

A place loved by so many

If there’s one thing Toronto has seen this summer, it’s that people turn up in support of the public places they love. The response to the flood has been an incredible testimony to the resilience of the community in the face of adversity. From staff and volunteers jumping right into the muck to help us clean, to the hundreds of individuals who have donated gifts of support, it’s been a real encouragement to us during this difficult—and emotional—time.

Here’s just a few of the messages of support we’ve received.

“Evergreen is such a beautiful and happy place for us. We will definitely help and support. I hope the turtles are okay❤️”

“So sorry to hear this. The Brick Works is such a special site and I hope you will be back up and running soon xx”

“I love this place! How can we help! Evergreen always does things for us- we could help!”

“Love to one of my favourite places in the city”

“it hurts so much seeing my favourite place in the city completely flooded.”

“Wild scene. Thanks for the link to donate, it’s such a special place for all Torontonians”

The people want to know...

Here’s some of the main questions we’ve been getting.

What still needs to be done?

Our initial flood recovery plan is to focus on safely reopening the site to the public and getting beloved programs up and running as soon as possible.  That phase 1 effort is includes:

    • Ensuring safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors to the site
    • Clearing debris, and then washing and sanitizing floors, walls, furniture and equipment;
    • Sweeping and spray-cleaning outdoor paved surfaces such as parking lots and common areas;
    • Cleaning up garden areas, including planters and garden beds that were shifted in the flood;

We have been assessed and cleared to reopen are currently in phase 2 of remediation:

    • Repairing and replacing damaged equipment and supplies, from materials for our children’s programs to hand dryers in the washrooms to 20,000 litre-sized cisterns;
    • Repairing and bringing the elevator back online.

Our next phase will include:

    • Replacement of kitchen equipment and counters, removal and replacement of drywal and structural repairs;
    • Review of design considerations as we repair damage to identify ways we can build back to be more resilient.

The fourth and final phase play out over the next 6 months to 2 years:

    • Repairs prioritized based on use/need;
    • Incorporation of more flood resilient designs into our planned EBW capital projects allowing us to better withstand the higher flood levels we anticipate as a result of climate change.

Health and safety is at the forefront of our recovery strategy.  We work closely with remediation experts specializing in health and safety and engineering, to guide our recovery.

What does it mean that the Brick Works was designed for flooding?

Here are few examples of our flood preparedness plan:

  • Site-wide evacuation plan and procedures;
  • Flood watch protocols, including monitoring in conjunction with TRCA and on-site rain gauges;
  • Flood-proofing measures for buildings, such as all electric and mechanical equipment on the second floor or higher in all buildings, and no drywall or carpet on ground floors;
  • Starting from the ground up, we installed a Cupolex foundation in our buildings that not only raises the floor but also helps water, moisture, and gases escape from beneath. This innovative system creates a ventilated void under the structure, improving air circulation and reducing the risk of moisture buildup;
  • Natural protection, especially an elaborate system of recessed greenways (rows of shrubs that trap groundwater) and sponge grounds.

Flood Recovery fund: As a site located on a flood plain, insurers will not offer flood coverage to us. This is why we have diligently set aside some funds for recovery.

Are the turtles okay?

The turtles, beavers, frogs, herons and many other animals have been spotted and are safe here at their home in the Don Valley!

Spaces that require your continued support

As you can imagine, some spaces on site, like the Children’s Garden, camp classrooms, the Garden Market and ground floor spaces have been hit the hardest. We need your ongoing help to restore these beloved spaces to their original state.

Flooding in the Children's Garden
"Seeing the Children’s Garden submerged in the flood and the aftermath of it all has been devastating. Knowing such a special gem of a place at the Brick Works was not able to be accessed by our campers, by families and visitors for Weekend Nature Play was hard." - Jessica Vuong, Program Officer at Evergreen
Camp classroom after the flood.
"The impact on our camp programming spaces was devastating to say the least. Our team were heartbroken and disarrayed to find so many of our programming materials damaged by the impact of the flood, many of which had to be thrown away as garbage." - Fatima Ali, Program Officer at Evergreen
The Garden Market after the flood
"The Evergreen Garden Market experienced significant damage, leading to considerable losses. Our store is home to over 100 local artisans and small businesses, so the impact on our vendors, with whom we have close relationships, was deeply felt." - Michelle Zeppieri, Assistant Manager at the Evergreen Garden Market

Boost your impact

When you choose to give monthly, your recurring donations add up and create an even bigger impact in the long run. This gives more people access to great, climate-ready public places.

Reduce costs

Processing donations requires some administrative overhead, but monthly donations require fewer than on-time gifts. Monthly giving can contribute to streamlined processes for managing recurring donations, resulting in cost savings in terms of staff time and resources.

Make it easy

Monthly donations make supporting your favourite cause a breeze. No need to try and remember who and when you gave to. Donations are automatic and on a recurring schedule. Plus our donor portal lets you easily manage your donation and download tax receipts.

Budget friendly

Rather than making a larger one-time gift, breaking the donation into smaller increments allows you to provide meaningful support without straining your finances.

It's more sustainable

Monthly donors are an important part in helping us plan ahead and allocate resources each year. This ensures we can continue to offer great public programming and reach even more communities in Canada with better public places.
