Public markets

Through our public market strategy, we aim to create the space (Evergreen Brick Works) and opportunity for small businesses to provide sustainable and accessible food and products to our communities.

The heartbeat of a bustling city life

Thousands of people visit our public markets at Evergreen Brick Works every year to connect with their local community, access fresh and healthy food and support the local economy. Whether you’re doing your weekly food shop at the Saturday Farmers Market, picking up a plant from the Garden Market or hunting for vintage items at the Ontario Vintage Market, you’re guaranteed to purchase something that is ethically and sustainably made and in support of the local economy. Since its inception, the success of our public markets program has enabled us to test new ideas and scale solutions, positioning Evergreen Brick Works as a known leader in sustainable ideas for public markets across the country.

Objectives for our public markets

Our cities and the people who occupy them are shaped by their public markets. In our ongoing efforts to create better public places, we are actively working on providing our communities with better public markets.

To connect people

Our cities and the people who occupy them are shaped by their public markets. In our ongoing efforts to create better public places, we are actively working on providing our communities with better public markets.

To provide economic opportunities

Public markets are the backbone of many local economies. Our markets are a mechanism for small and medium-sized businesses to enter the marketplace, as it’s much less expensive to operate a stall at our markets in comparison to a stand-alone store. Our markets are places where people can come together to support many local businesses in one location, thus promoting community economic development by keeping money in the local neighbourhood.

To provide access to healthy food

The Saturday Farmers Market, open year-round, is the largest of its kind in Toronto. It plays a key role in improving residents’ access to fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s a place where regional growers and food artisans can connect with their customer base, allowing consumers to understand where their food comes from and how it is grown.

Impact

Our public markets are some of the largest in Toronto and are frequented by thousands of visitors every year.

  • 108,754 visits to the Saturday Farmers Market in 2022.
  • The outdoor Farmers Market hosts 70 individual vendors and the indoor Farmers Market hosts 50 individual vendors each Saturday. However, many of our vendors are occasional, so we’ve hosted a total of 101 individual vendors during the 2023 outdoor season.
  • Maintain partnerships with community groups like Community Fridges, Newcomer Kitchen, FoodShare Toronto and Foodpreneur Lab.

“I love the Brick Works Farmers Market because of all the customers that come and connect with everyone, and it’s just my favourite thing in the whole world. I love that everyone brings a dog; I love the twinkle lights; I love that we ring a bell at the beginning of the market; and I love that some of the vendors burn sage and walk around. I just adore this market!”
