Expansive Dances: National Ballet of Canada in partnership with Evergreen
National Ballet of Canada performances filmed at Evergreen Brick Works, heralding hope for a brighter future.
Directed by acclaimed Canadian director Ben Shirinian and produced by Mr. Shirinian and Jared Cook of Lookout, the films unfold in expansive spaces that subvert the state of confinement brought on by the pandemic, heralding hope for a brighter future.
by Robert Binet
Choreographic Associate Robert Binet revisited a work he created for Company Wayne McGregor in 2012, this time in the vast outdoor setting of Evergreen Brick Works. Lake Maligne was inspired by the work of Canadian painter Lawren Harris and is deeply connected to nature and the symbolism of the natural world.
Performed by First Soloist Spencer Hack, Lake Maligne, set to Arve Henriksen’s Loved One and Smog’s Palimpsest, was the jumping off point for Mr. Binet’s interactive dance piece, The Dreamers Ever Leave You, which premiered at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2016.
by Alysa Pires
Featuring Second Soloist Christopher Gerty, In Between adapts an earlier piece of the same name that Choreographic Associate Alysa Pires created for the National Ballet’s Choreographic Workshop.
In this film version shot onsite at Evergreen Brick Works and set to original music by Adam Sakiyama, Ms. Pires condensed her original work to a solo that expresses a sense of restlessness and a yearning for comfort that feel especially relevant during these uncertain times.
