Winter Solstice Walk with Lost Rivers

Winter walk at Evergreen Brick Works

The winter solstice marks the astronomical beginning of winter, when Earth’s North Pole is tilted farthest away from the sun, though here in Toronto we might feel winter started much earlier.

From this time forward, our days will begin to lengthen. Only a minute or two at first, but it won’t take long for it to be noticeably lighter for longer.

Led by the Lost Rivers Toronto team, come listen to solstice stories from across the world, along with some history of the Don Valley, as we explore the wetland and meadow trails in the Don Valley Brick Works Park and delve into parts of the beautiful restoration of this former industrial site.

You can register for the walk via Eventbrite. The link will be posted here on December 5. Registrants will receive a voucher for a free hot chocolate!

The walk will begin in front of the Watershed Wall in Tiffany Commons and will be exploring the quarry via accessible paved or granular level paths. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and appropriate footwear. The paths can sometimes be icy in winter - keep an eye on the weather! We may alter our route day of due to icy or unsafe trail conditions.

This is a rain (or snow) or shine walk!

Location: Meet at the Watershed Wall

Time: 2:30pm - 4:30pm

Tafelmusik Performance

Enjoy an intimate chamber concert performance by Tafelmusik artists Geneviève Gilardeau (violin) and Lucas Harris (lute/guitar). Their program will be based on the music of Scotland, drawing from both baroque and traditional fiddle repertoires. This performance is part of Evergreen’s Cultural Performing Arts Series, presented by Bank of America.

Geneviève Gilardeau has been a core member of Tafelmusik since 1999. She has been featured as a soloist several times with the group, in recordings of concertos by Vivaldi and Leclair, and in concert playing concertos by Bach and Telemann. She was introduced to baroque performance practice by the violinist and conductor Jean-François Rivest, at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec à Chicoutimi and at the Université de Montréal, where she obtained her Master’s degree. A core member of Les Violons du Roy from 1995 to 1998, she commuted during those years from Quebec City to Toronto in order to study baroque violin with Jeanne Lamon at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory. Geneviève also performs with several groups in Toronto (Aradia, Toronto Consort, Classical Consort) and in Montreal (Masques, Les voix humaines). With her husband, lutenist Lucas Harris, she released the CD The Bach-Weiss Sonata. She is the proud mother of 11-year-old Daphnée Gilardeau Harris.

Lucas Harris discovered the lute during his undergraduate studies at Pomona College, where he graduated summa cum laude. He then studied early music in Italy at the Civica scuola di musica di Milano and then in Germany at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. He moved to Toronto in 2004 and became the regular lutenist for the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. He plays with many other ensembles in Canada and the US, including the Newberry Consort (Chicago), the Helicon Foundation (New York), and the Smithsonian Chamber Players (Washington, D.C.). He is on faculty at the Tafelmusik Summer and Winter Baroque Institutes, Oberlin Conservatory’s Baroque Performance Institute, and VEMF’s Baroque Vocal Programme. In 2014 Lucas completed graduate studies in choral conducting and was chosen as the Artistic Director of the Toronto Chamber Choir. He has also directed projects for Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Ohio State University Opera Program, Les voix baroques, and The Toronto Consort.
