In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it’s easy to forget our connection to the natural world. However, recognizing all our relations — our interconnectedness with every living being — can lead to a deeper understanding of our place on Earth.

By appreciating our role within the broader ecosystem, we can make choices that benefit not just us, but all life forms. This shift in perspective helps create a healthier planet, support biodiversity and ensure a more balanced and resilient environment for future generations.

Understanding why this matters can inspire more mindful decisions in our daily lives and encourage actions that protect and preserve the natural world.

Understanding ‘all our relations’

The phrase “all our relations” is rooted in Indigenous wisdom, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all life forms. It recognizes that humans are not separate from nature but are part of a vast web of life that includes animals, plants and even the elements. This perspective encourages respect, reciprocity and responsibility toward all living beings.

Here are some ways to move away from a human-centric perspective:

1. Expand your Awareness

Start by broadening your awareness of the natural world. Spend time outdoors, observe wildlife, and learn about local ecosystems. Understanding the intricacies of nature can deepen your appreciation for its complexity and beauty.

2. Practice gratitude

Adopt a mindset of gratitude for all the resources nature provides. This can include simple practices like thanking the plants and animals that become your food or acknowledging the trees that clean our air and keep us cool in the summer. Gratitude fosters a deeper connection and respect for all living beings.

3. Learn from Indigenous wisdom

Indigenous cultures around the world have long understood the importance of living in harmony with nature. Seek out Indigenous teachings and perspectives and learn from their sustainable practices and deep respect for the Earth. 4. Support Biodiversity

Biodiversity is crucial for a healthy planet. Support conservation efforts, create wildlife-friendly spaces in your community, and advocate for policies that protect natural habitats. By promoting biodiversity, we help ensure the survival of countless species and the health of our planet. 5. Cultivate empathy

Develop empathy for all living beings by imagining their experiences. Understand that animals, plants and even ecosystems have their own intrinsic value and rights. Empathy encourages us to treat all forms of life with kindness and respect. Read more about designing cities to co-exist with other forms of life.

Embracing a Holistic View

Shifting from a human-centric perspective to one that recognizes all our relations requires a fundamental change in how we view our role on Earth. By expanding our awareness, practicing gratitude, learning from Indigenous wisdom, supporting biodiversity and cultivating empathy, we can create a more balanced and sustainable world.
