What is the Loop Trail?

Part of the City of Toronto’s ambitious Ravine Strategy, the Loop Trail is a project to develop a 72 km circular trail in Toronto’s ravines. The trail will support residents and visitors to walk, cycle and run in the ravine corridors of the Don and Humber valleys, the Finch Hydro Corridor and the Lake Ontario waterfront. The Loop Trail envisions a Toronto that is connected to thriving natural systems, that encourages active and healthy living and is open and accessible to all. It is an invitation to explore the city, discover new connections with nature and neighbouring communities, and to participate in caring for the trail through public programming and stewardship.

The Loop Trail will bring together many disconnected trail fragments into a new whole to connect Toronto’s globally unique ravine system with its incredible diversity of people and neighbourhoods. Its vast connections will inspire exploration, social connection a profound sense of place that is uniquely Toronto.

Through partnerships and community engagement, a vision for the Loop Trail is coming into focus. It includes new amenities such as shelter, drinking water and washrooms, as well as improved community access, and a base trail that is safe, beautiful, and easy to navigate all along its route. The Loop Trail will include opportunities for many community organizations to offer programming such as seasonal festivals, nature walks, public art and children’s activities. All of this will help to establish a new cultural touchstone in the city in the midst of its natural jewel – the ravine system. The Loop Trail brings together many existing trails with new accessible connections and in so doing will create an experience much greater than the sum of its parts.

This project is co-led by the City of Toronto, Evergreen, the Toronto Foundation and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), working in collaboration with a growing network of partners.
