Garden Market Assistant

Evergreen Garden Market primarily carries products from artisans, crafts people and small-batch producers in Canada. We champion Ontario native plants for their low maintenance and their positive impact on the local ecosystem. These standards support the mission behind the Garden Market—a social enterprise that directs 100% of its proceeds back to Evergreen.

NOTE: Garden Market Assistant is not a gardening role!

Instead, it is a mix between keeping our general retail store in tip top shape and ensuring our plant stock thrives throughout the entire season, no matter how dry or how wet.

Tasks include:

  • Total plant care: watering, watering, and more watering!

  • Receive, label, and merchandise plants and hard goods.

  • Restock store shelves. Keep 'Potting Shed' inventory well-organised.

  • Light custodial duties (dusting store shelves, taking out garbage/recycling, sweeping, mopping).

  • Assist customers with their purchases, e.g., bringing goods to and loading car.

  • Act as an ambassador to Evergreen and the Garden Market.

What you bring: To be successful at and enjoy this role, you:   

  • Are comfortable working outdoors and occasionally reaching, crouching, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Don't mind getting a little dirt under your finger nails, in fact the dirtier the better!
  • Can work independently and take direction well.
  • Are reliable, enthusiastic, and keen to learn.
  • Have a friendly, outgoing personality with strong verbal communication skills in English.
  • Experience in customer service and native plants are an asset, but not required.

When and where: Evergreen Garden Market at Evergreen Brick Works, 550 Bayview Ave. Weekdays and weekends. 

Commitment: One 4-hour shift per week.

How we’ll support you:  All volunteers are required to attend a mandatory orientation and preliminary screening on Tuesday, April 4 | 5:30pm-7:00pm. Training takes place on the job and focuses on the many sustainable products and native plants EGM offers. You’ll work closely with experienced Garden Market staff and other volunteers.

Good to know: Garden Market Assistants run back and forth between the store and Potting Shed, and often receive goods in the outdoor section of the market, so come dressed appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. Evergreen runs a free shuttle bus 7-days-a-week from Broadview Subway station.
