Toronto: Camp Specialist, Leaders in Training Program

Evergreen is currently seeking to add to its team of Camp Specialists, Leaders in Training Program. This group of individuals are the youth leadership specialists that ensure Evergreen’s Adventure Camp Leaders in Training program is a fun, challenging, supportive environment in which participants can learn, grow and thrive together.

Our Camp Specialists, Leaders in Training contribute to the overall success of Evergreen Adventure Camp by role modeling resiliency and supporting a culture of socially engaged leadership development among campers and the camp community   

About the Role:

Camp Specialists, Leaders in Training are responsible for the care and safety of a co-ed group of up to 10 youth aged 12-15. Similarly, the role of Leaders-in-Training Counsellor for the Trail Blazers program is responsible for the care and safety of youth who self-identify as female, Trans, and gender non-conforming. Our OCA accredited Evergreen Adventure Camp program serves approximately 160 campers per week.

Camp Specialists, Leaders in Training play a key role in on-the-ground program delivery, utilizing their experience working with youth to help our programs come alive. Camp Specialist, Leaders in Training are responsible for developing curriculum for the Leaders in Training program, including the development of a Social Enterprise Project, Design Challenge or Stewardship plan for the site.

Camp Specialists thrive in a challenging environment and provide consistent, creative support to youth campers and the broader camp team; they are mature team-players and strong communicators who believe in the power and importance to youth of empowerment, skills building, and design thinking.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Creatively guide a group of 10 campers, ages 12-15, in skill and leadership building activities including hiking, biking, fire building, collaborative art, orienteering, songs, and storytelling
  • Prepare and empower LIT participants to facilitate camp-wide programming
  • Assume duties as a Camp Counsellor as required
  • Supervise on and/or off-site overnights, as required
  • Communicate safety and health regulations to program participants and ensure they understand them;
  • Help monitor and engage campers during lunch, snack and extended care programs
  • Provide mentorship, feedback and guidance to new staff and volunteers (Assistant Camp Counsellors)
  • Monitor and maintain program spaces and materials, identifying and documenting any concerns with supervisor;
  • Participate in end of day reflections and provide feedback and support to the rest of the camp team
  • Document any behavioural incidents, injuries or accidents, and report to Director/Manager in a timely way;
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians
  • Participate in pre-camp training in June, including reading the Staff Handbook;
  • Act as a positive role model and leader;

About You:

You excel in the following areas:

  • Communication. Communicate in a confident, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques depending on the audience. 
  • Attention to detail. Will not let important details slip through the cracks
  • Flexibility/adaptability. Adjust quickly to changing circumstances, priorities and conditions, while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency

You have the following qualifications:

  • 2-3 years’ experience working in a camp setting
  • Previous experience developing outdoor education programs for youth
  • University or college degree/diploma (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Background in Leadership Studies, Biology, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Arts or similar an asset
  • Knowledge of Stewardship and Ecological Restoration practices an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR ‘C’, or willingness to obtain
  • Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check or willingness to obtain
  • Experience with Nature Connection Core Routines or Outdoor Experiential Education an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the growth of a culture of nature connection in children and young people
  • OCT certified teachers, teacher candidates strongly encouraged to apply
  • Wilderness First Aid or experience leading backcountry trips an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

Reporting Relationships:

  • Supervised by Camp Director

Working Conditions:

  • Position is based out of Evergreen’s head office at Evergreen Brick Works Campus in Toronto
  • Working outdoors in inclement weather
  • Standing for extended periods of time
  • Able to lift weight in excess of 20 pounds
  • May be required to provide occasional evening or overnight support at campgrounds for specialty programs

Contract

  • Contract, Full-time mid-June to September 4, 2020

Hourly Wage

Range $15.55 – $18.95
