Stretching out along Lake Ontario’s north shore from the GTA, east to the Trent River valley, Durham and Northumberland counties contain rich farm lands on the south slope of the Oak Ridges Moraine, and weather moderated by the “lake effect.”
These conditions favour crops with a short, mild growing season. Spring produce flourishes here—asparagus, strawberries and a wide assortment of greens and herbs. Heirloom summer vegetables, including tomatoes and melons, as well as nuts and winter storage vegetables (potatoes, onions and carrots) also grow well.
This is mixed farming country, and animal husbandry takes a place of pride with the highest quality dairy products and meats making a major contribution to the regional table. Durham-Northumberland’s proximity to Greater Toronto means that markets are close at hand, where new customers encourage experiments in specialty crops and preserves.
