Peterborough and the Kawarthas sit near the northern extreme of southern Ontario’s food belt.
To many, Peterborough means grain, based upon the historic association with Red Fife spring wheat that was developed there, and which still is favoured by artisan bread bakers. The relatively northern clime favours animal husbandry—from beef, pork and poultry, to bison, goats and alpaca—while the glacial soils support a wonderful assortment of seasonal and specialty greens, and the wetlands produce some of Ontario’s finest wild rice.
The Kawartha region also takes advantage of its location and traditions by offering maple, honey and seasonal orchard products, such as strawberries and rhubarb in the spring, and squash and other root vegetables in the fall.
