In My Backyard chronicles director Jamie Day Fleck’s personal journey into urban agriculture, converting her entire backyard into a kitchen garden. Using her personal story as a jumping-off point, she branches out to look at the various solutions that backyard gardeners and urban growers have dreamed up and implemented in her city — Toronto, Ontario, Canada. By looking at the stories of individuals that are changing their communities through local food production, it becomes evident that positive changes are being implemented and solutions are available. To many people global environmental problems seem insurmountable but a few people are working diligently to create new paradigms and show bright possibilities within urban spaces.
After the screening, join Director Jamie Day Fleck for an interactive workshop and discussion. Use the information and solutions from the documentary to inspire your family and community! Come brainstorm, network and learn how we can change the world through gardening and growing vegetables in the city.

The last decade has witnessed a profound shift to a new way of understanding soil health – one which is actually the old way of considering soil health: by focusing on the soil as a holistic, living ecosystem. In this short workshop we’ll introduce the key microbial actors at work in the soil microbiome, the 6 principles of soil health gleaned from the regenerative agriculture movement, and strategies for adapting probiotic health to our own gardens and growing spaces via composting and other techniques.
The workshop will be hosted by Sean Smith of Crooked Farmz. Crooked Farmz is a Toronto-based micro farm producing small-batch composts and aerobic compost teas for microbial health in agriculture, horticulture, and arboriculture. We serve seasonal regenerative teas at local farmers’ markets and garden centres, offer a compost tea CSA subscription service with 60+ members, and brew custom teas for professional clients across the Greater Toronto Area. We can be found in the Evergreen Brick Works Garden Centre all summer.
