Jen Schaffer and the Shiners, who hail from Toronto, Montreal, Welland and the UK, are purveyors of original soulful acoustic roots music with lush harmonies and rich funky bass.

The Shiners are Jen Schaffer, lead singer, guitarist, songwriter and cat herder of the band; Simon Law, the band’s drummer, keyboardist, background vocalist and producer, who is also a Grammy winning songwriter of Soul II Soul’s Back to Life and original member of that band; Hideki Kumagai on bass; John Teshima plays guitar, both electric and acoustic – he also plays keyboards and adds background harmonies; and Dorothy Hwang on keyboards and mandolin as well as background harmonies. Emmanuel Szeptycki, Jen’s violinist offspring, joins the Shiners occasionally for recordings and performances, when not doing their own music in Montreal and at Concordia University.

Atonal blends site-specific film, music, and performance to explore how improvisational sound may affect our understanding of images, memories, the environment, and language.

When Nature Calls is Atonal’s response to the rich landscape of Evergreen Brick Works, a space where one encounters resilient native plants with intricate organic textures and living creatures that populate the bush, the pond, and the sky. When Nature Calls interprets a walk in Evergreen Brick Works through experimental video and sound, calling attention to fine details such as the unique texture of bark, an insect hiding underneath a leaf, or the sound of being submerged in a stream.

This performance is suitable for an all-ages audience. If the public would like to tip the performers, we invite them to make a donation to the Evergreen Brick Works.

Davis is a country and rock guitar and vocal artist trained in Nashville and a performer at Evergreen for over 10 years. He is known for his acoustic guitar solos and arrangements of classic songs into modern vibes. From acoustic hard rock to off-broadway, to traditional and modern country he aims to take you to a time and place where you feel excitement and nostalgia, blended with some hot riffs and solos that beg you to dance.
