Citizen Science makes a splash: Evergreen celebrates World Water Day, March 22
Last year over 10,000 volunteers provided data and restorative work at 400-plus urban watersheds events, thanks in part to program partner HSBC
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto, ON - March 15, 2017) – Evergreen celebrates Water Month in March and the thousands of Canadians who participate in its environmental stewardship programs made possible by the longstanding partnership with HSBC Bank Canada. The hands-on volunteer-based initiatives inspire participants to become active Citizen Scientists to conserve and protect their local urban watersheds across the country.
Citizen Science, the collection of scientific data by non-scientists, is critical in building and maintaining healthy waterways and habitats in urban areas. Since its inception in 2012, Evergreen’s Uncover Your Creeks program has teamed Evergreen experts with a dedicated group of citizen scientists to assist in conducting important water-quality testing and restoration work in ecosystems in five major urban centres.
This holistic watershed education program enables and empowers individuals to collect, monitor and analyze water quality samples, learn about species identification, remove invasive plants and reintroduce native and food plants. Last year saw more than 400 community events across the country, more than doubling youth participation.
The importance of this scientific data and its impact are highlighted in the video Uncover Your Creeks, HSBC Urban Action for Nature released today in advance of World Water Day on March 22, 2017.
“Volunteers have a vital role in Evergreen’s stewardship programs and its impact is profound in empowering individuals and connecting communities to their natural urban ecosystems,” says Geoff Cape, Evergreen CEO. “This remarkable partnership with HSBC has proven the powerful role that citizens play in creating flourishing cities.”
Through its ten-year partnership with HSBC, Evergreen programs have expanded to Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal where participants have provided valuable information for scientists and municipalities and improved the health and wellness of the natural habitats and waterways in these urban areas. Last year, Evergreen’s research and restoration work has accomplished:
- A total of 13,210 native trees, shrubs or wildflowers were planted coast to coast.
- Sulfate levels managed by Evergreen’s citizen scientists, in collaboration with community partners, have brought back the salmon population in Vancouver’s Still Creek.
- Evergreen-supported groups planted willow trees along the banks of the Bow River in Calgary enabling the return of trout in those waterways.
“We are incredibly proud of our long-standing partnership with Evergreen, helping improve urban ecosystems and involve communities across the country in citizen science,” says Jacques Fleurant, Chief Financial Officer, HSBC Bank Canada and Executive Sponsor of the program. “From enhancing biodiversity, to monitoring watershed health, to helping people access healthy food, we are thrilled to see our support for Evergreen making a real impact.”
