Evergreen opens modified Farmers Market on Saturday, June 13 at the Brick Works

Addition of online advance ordering part of the new market experience

(Toronto, ON) June 11, 2020 – Evergreen welcomes its community and farmers back for a modified Saturday Farmers Market starting June 13, 2019 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., as part of a safe and gradual reopening of Evergreen Brick Works. The weekly market, one of Toronto’s largest farmers’ markets, will offer local and seasonal food from over 45 farmers and producers through same-day purchases and a new online platform for advanced orders for quick pick up on market day. A range of safety protocols has been put in place to ensure that market-goers can continue to connect with local food in a safe and new way.

“We look forward to meeting outdoors and sharing the weekly market day ritual once again with our community and farmers,” said Orit Sarfaty , Evergreen’s Chief Program Officer. “Connecting to and supporting local farmers and food systems remains an integral role in creating healthy, flourishing cities. We have been working closing with our farmers, the city and health officials to ensure that we can provide a safe and enjoyable market experience.”

Start online, shop outside

Part of the adapted model includes a new online option to make advanced purchases directly from farmers and producers for pick up at each vendor booth on market day. Purchases are available online until Thursday at noon each week, encouraging a cashless, minimal contact, faster shopping experience. Same-day and walk-up visitors are welcome.

Ensuring the safety of our community

Following the guidance and requirements set out by the Province, City of Toronto and health officials, Evergreen has adopted a range of measures to ensure the safety of our community, vendors and staff in the market. These include a modified outdoor layout, a one-way system and maximum capacity of 50 visitors in the market to meet physical distancing guidelines. Additional hand sanitizing facilities are available. Masks are mandatory. Please bring your own; some are available on-site by donation. To plan your visit, please read the Farmers Market guidelines.

Pre-ordered Farm in a Box for Saturday pick-up

The Farm in a Box program, launched in March, continues for those who prefer this new ritual of picking up a pre-selected box. Farm in a Box represents about 15 farmers per week, including products like vegetables, fruit, mushrooms, bread, cheese and hummus. Add-on options include eggs, chocolate and honey, as well as the Dairy and Meat & Fish Boxes.

What’s available on-site

In addition to the modified Farmers Market, the outdoor nursery at Evergreen Garden Market is open from Thursday to Sunday from 10am-5pm. The Don Valley Brick Works Park north of the stie remains open (please visit the City of Toronto website for more information.) On-site visitors are required to keep two metres (six feet) apart from others. During the gradual reopening, some of the Brick Works facilities remain closed and programs suspended. The full list, visit here.
