FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto, ON – April 6, 2017) –The Government of Canada announced last week its commitment of more than $1.8 billion towards GO Transit’s regional express rail program, plus 300 additional projects across Ontario. The roll out of the rapid transit infrastructure is one of the biggest in the province’s history and one that requires long-term dedicated funding for an efficient, accessible, affordable and fully integrated regional transportation system.
“We applaud the Government of Canada’s investment in GO Transit’s regional express rail. This support for public transit will help realize a quicker completion of new infrastructure, allowing our communities to reap the benefits sooner,” says Robert Plitt, Evergreen’s Executive Director of Programs that focus on critical urban infrastructure issues. “Expanded transit is more than moving more people from A to B. New infrastructure will help reduce GHG emissions, support our growing economy and advance the building of complete communities in the region.”
With more than 80 per cent of Canadians living in cities, a national vision of how people and goods move around and between our cities is integral for economic prosperity. More than ever, sharing ideas between communities is an essential step. Last month, Evergreen, in partnership with Pembina Institute, published Getting on Board, a report highlighting best practices in stakeholder engagement and land use planning for rapid transit projects and how communities can learn from each other in the process.
