Youth Engagement

Evergreen's youth programs are open to all youth ages 15–30 and are as diverse and dynamic as the cities we live in. While most of our programs are located in the Greater Toronto Area, opportunities for co-op placements and internships are also available in the Metro Vancouver area.

Work.

Gain experience, develop new skills with a green edge, and earn cash or credits. Green City Interns work year-round in outdoor education, urban greening, fundraising, communications, green event planning, and non-profit administration. Participants in the Take BAC program design and create green spaces in their communities, as part of a unique summer job experience.

Move. Grow. Connect.

Navigate the ravine system on foot or by bike. Trace the path your food takes, from a seed to your fork. Meet other youth, have fun, and explore your connection to nature and the city, by taking part in one of Evergreen's community programs.

Make a difference.

Plant a tree. Build a bike for our community fleet. Lead kids on a green adventure. Whether it's an hour, a day, or a whole summer, Evergreen has a volunteer opportunity for you, your club, team, or classroom.

Green City Internships

Through partnerships with several school boards, colleges and universities, and community organizations, Green City Internships connect youth with paid or credited opportunities to work and learn alongside Evergreen staff, in a full or part-time role, for periods ranging from a few months to a full year. Green City Interns can gain experience in all areas of stewardship, community programming, green facilities management, and business administration.

This long-term engagement provides a customized approach to meet individual goals, gain valuable work experience, and make connections with professional contacts in the environmental field and beyond. By collaborating with other up-and-coming environmental groups and industries, youth have a chance to build their networks and experience a diverse array of future career options.

Take BAC

Delivered in partnership with Toronto Community Housing and the City of Toronto, Evergreen offers a youth training and community greening program with young people in Toronto’s most under-served neighbourhoods. This program enables young people from each of these communities to participate in planning and implementing a local community improvement and greening project. Teams of youth (who are tenants of TCH buildings) identify a space outside their building that needs cleaning, greening and beautification. They are given a project budget and participate in workshops to help them plan and implement their garden, budget their money, and use the project to develop leadership skills. The journey that participants take is a powerful one because it demonstrates how coordinated and collaborative individual actions can make meaningful and lasting change.

In 2009, more than 100 youth participated in 18 planting projects. This year, the program has expanded to include 26 neighbourhood greening sites, involving about 170 youth. Check out our blog to learn more about the 2010 program launch event at Evergreen Brick Works!
