In 2010, Walmart Canada and Evergreen are pleased to support these community groups in their efforts to restore and steward local green spaces in cities and towns across Canada.
FEED (Feed Everyone Everywhere Daily) Fort Vermilion - Fort Vermillion, AB
Peas on Earth in Fort Vermilion - An initiative to expand the existing community garden through the construction of raised beds, hoop houses, a community root cellar, a walking path and the addition of various shrubs. Community members of every age group will be invited to participate in the garden's development and maintenance.
Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation - Coaldale, AB
Native Tree and Shrub Planting - Native vegetation will be planted in order to attract and support wildlife on the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation location. In addition to serving as a wildlife rescue and conservation centre, the site will be used as an outdoor classroom and instructional example.
Jewish Family Service Agency - Vancouver, BC
The World in a Garden - This project looks at the food production process and the cross-currents of culture, nutrition, organics, and community cultivation. Through gardening the project will address issues of food security, heritage seeds, seed saving, organic composting, and beekeeping while promoting biodiversity and environmental stewardship, all from a multicultural, intergenerational, and economically diverse framework.
Renfrew Collingwood Food Security Institute - Vancouver, BC
Renfrew Collingwood Community Gardens - This project seeks to increase the accessibility of the current Collingwood Community Gardens site by extending the underground piping and installing standing hose bibs. The Renfrew Collingwood Food Security Institute is also planning on developing two new community gardens to help meet the demand for urban growing space.
Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary Society - Victoria, BC
Bridge Replacement and Reforestation - This project seeks to engage the community in improving habitat, addressing climate change, meeting Saanich Urban Forest Strategy Guidelines, expanding the forest canopy and responding to the changing environment while controlling human access through the area.
Peachland Sportsmen's Association - Peachland, BC
Trepanier Creek Riparian Restoration Project - Focused on the transformation of a lawn adjacent to the creek back into a more natural state through native tree and shrub plantings, in addition to improving the public's access to information on the importance of protecting riparian ecosystems.
Gabriola Commons Foundation - Gabriola, BC
GC Native Plant Restoration Project - The project will protect the wooded ecosystem from threatening invasive species. Invasive plants will be replaced with regionally appropriate native plant species. A two-way learning process will be fostered as botanists impart horticultural expertise while locals share knowledge and research about the site.
Catching the Spirit Youth Society - Burnaby, BC
Catching the Spirit Youth Society & BCIT Fish, Wildlife and Recreation Program Community Garden - Youth will learn how to grow vegetables and native plants through the construction of a series of raised beds with full accessibility. Food harvested from the garden will be donated to food banks and neighbourhood houses, while native plants will be used in community stream restoration projects.
Sea Island Community Association - Richmond, BC
Sea Island Slough Enhancement - The goal of this project is to restore and maintain the Sea Island Slough, which is one of the few remaining natural sloughs in Richmond. This particular slough provides habitat for fish and wildlife and acts as a buffer between the Burkeville community and the adjacent highway.
Cedar Cottage Garden Society - Vancouver, BC
Growing Sustainable Community: Expansion - This expansion to the garden will result in greater visibility, as the site will grow to be bordered by two roads. The addition of 40 plots of organically grown vegetables and a "living fence" of native and fruit bearing bushes and trees will increase the biodiversity of the area in addition to creating multiple pollinating opportunities for bees.
North Shore Community Garden Society - North Vancouver, BC
Lillooet Park Community Garden - This garden is unique in that it is the first garden in the municipality and will provide ample opportunity for partnerships between local residents. It will also provide educational opportunities for local residents and children to learn about native habitats and local food security.
Greater Terrace Beautification Society & Terrace Economic Development Authority - Terrace, BC
From Brownfield to Greenspace - Restoration of the site of an abandoned fuel station by planting native species and incorporating artistic elements into the site. The site has been abandoned for 15 years and is currently classified as a Brownfield.
Boys & Girls Club Services of Greater Victoria - Victoria, BC
Sustainability & Stewardship Projects - Focusing on the restoration of the wilderness camp's wetlands and woodlands, in addition to the development of a food garden. The project strives to create an educational, recreational and food producing green space for youth and families of the Greater Victoria Area.
Richmond Nature Park Society - Richmond, BC
Pond Habitat Restoration - Restoration of a pond habitat in the Richmond Nature Park through the removal of invasive blueberries and blackberries and subsequent addition of native shrubs and trees. This project will increase the natural biodiversity of the area as well as its educational value.
Brooklyn Creek Watershed Society - Comox, BC
BCWS-Project 2010 - Focusing on the removal of various invasive species which have displaced approximately 50% of the native grasses, plants and trees in the Brooklyn Creek riparian area. The large-scale removal of these invasive species will be followed by the planting of various native grasses and plants.
Broombusters Invasive Plant Society - Qualicum Beach, BC
Broombusters Invasive Plant Society Project 2010 - Broombusters focuses on widespread public education about the damage resulting from the spread of Scotch Broom as well as how to remove it. In addition to encouraging members of the community to remove this species whenever possible, Broombusters will also be leading weekend community removal opportunities every weekend for 2 months in the summer.
Habitat Acquisition Trust - Victoria, BC
Islandview Beach Good Neighbours - HAT will work with local landowners and community members to help them improve stewardship of the Cordova Shore. This program will improve the natural buffer zone around the park and provide residents with the tools needed to steward these special spaces.
Niverville Heritage Gardens - Niverville, MB
Niverville Heritage Gardens - This is an intergenerational project for the planting of two raised-bed gardens with a focus on seniors, youth, and bringing the two together through gardening, education and heritage.
North End Food Security Network - Winnipeg, MB
Growing Green Together 2010 - The development of community food gardens at five sites in Winnipeg to promote healthy eating and food choices while increasing the communities' food security. These gardens will incorporate native plants, a healing circle garden and a Spiral Garden to promote healing and creativity within and across cultures and age groups.
Kokum's Little Friends Daycare/Brandon Friendship Centre - Brandon, MB
Kokum's Little Friends Daycare - A vegetable garden will be constructed that follows traditional teaching with the help of Elders and other community members. Vegetables will be harvested to help support the centre's programs as well as to reduce the community's financial burden.
Sisters Initiating Steps Towards a Renewed Society (SISTARS) - Winnipeg, MB
Eagle Wing Early Education Centre - The development of a natural playground and community garden to increase the community's knowledge of the importance of ecological biodiversity, local food production and food security. The garden's programs will allow for intergenerational participation in the community development project.
Falls Brook Centre - Aberdeen, NB
South Knowlesville Edible Heritage Forest Garden - The objective is to demonstrate the mutually beneficial relationships that can occur among native plants by growing native edible plants in a way that mimics a natural forest ecosystem.
Friends of Blueberry Hill Nature Trust of New Brunswick - Fredericton, NB
Blueberry Hill Wetland Restoration and Trail Development - Restoration of the Blueberry Hill site will provide a unique opportunity for recreation, environmental education and community enrichment. The project consists of three main parts: restoration of the existing brook and wetland, trail network development, and community and volunteer engagement.
Bird Studies Canada - Sackville, NB
Healthy Beaches for People and Plovers - The plover is a federally and provincially endangered shorebird that depends on healthy beach habitat to breed. This project will enhance natural conditions of plover breeding habitat where recreational impacts are high through educational outreach opportunities, signage and rope fencing of vulnerable habitat locations.
Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden Inc - St. John’s, NL
Importance of Biodiversity: Public Education through Interpretation - Located on a 100 acre site, the MUN Botanical Garden contains more than 200 species of vascular plants. The plan for 2010 is to raise the community’s awareness and understanding of the importance of native species and biodiversity through the installation of interpretive signage throughout the garden’s trail system.

St. John's Safer Soil - A continuation of the 2008 Safer Soil project in which CLEAN/L partnered with soil-lead researchers to address elevated soil-lead levels in St. John's. A demonstration garden is open to the public for educational and participation purposes.
Hope for Wildlife Society - Head of Chezzetcook, NS
Rooftop Community Vegetable Garden - A rooftop fruit and vegetable garden will be created to educate people about the various environmental and health benefits of growing their own food. The rooftop garden will become part of a demonstration garden that is open to the public.
Nova Scotia Nature Trust - Halifax, NS
Purcell's Cove Trail Restoration and Maintenance Project - Covering over 30 hectares, Purcell's Cove includes a rich diversity of habitats including granite barrens and backlands. To help preserve the site, the NSNT will implement several educational outreach programs for landowners in the area, in addition to rerouting and improving trails throughout the site.
Mount Saint Vincent University - Halifax, NS
Community Garden - This project addresses the lack of access to a communal site for community members to come together to grow food in a safe and welcoming environment. Food harvested from one plot on this site will be donated to the on-campus food bank. Workshops, education sessions and community gardening parties will be organized to raise awareness of food security issues and the benefits of organic community gardening.

Belmont Community Park - The development of a park with the help of various community groups including church groups and horticultural groups. Various native trees and shrubs will be planted with the help of volunteers.

Harbourfront Community Connect Garden - The development of the Harbourfront Community Centre’s Community Connect Garden will provide free services for community members in the area of long-term food security, nutritional education, and training in food preparation.

Bannerman Park Rejuvenation Project - This project is focused on the rejuvenation of a historic recreation area that serves the Town of Porcupine. Accessibility, environmental stewardship and community involvement are the main goals of the project.

North Dundas Community Planting Program - Goals of this project include establishing a permanent natural windbreak to create wildlife habitat and biodiversity, providing educational opportunities, and acting as a naturalization vanguard for the larger township.

Community Garden - This community garden is part of an overall plan to have the land remain as a natural habitat in an urban environment. The 9 acre site will include 20 raised beds to start, with much of the land being maintained in its natural state.

Community Garden for West Windsor - This community garden will be open to all Windsor-Essex County residents to plant and harvest various fruits and vegetables. The site will also act as a venue for programming related to subjects with health impacts, including environmental stewardship projects.

Neighbours Growing Together - This project focuses on the continuation of the Community Garden Collective’s programming in an effort to increase food security in Thunder Bay. Ottawa Children’s Garden - This is the first dedicated children’s garden in Ottawa. Its purpose is to engage and educate the senses, the mind and the imagination and to foster an environmental ethic through opportunities to learn about ecological landscaping , growing food and caring for plants. The project has involved the transformation of an underused park with minimal landscaping into a vibrant community space designed by children from a local school.

Invasive Species Education Program - A continuation of the organization's efforts to remove the invasive species Glossy Buckthorn and Phragmites australis from the inner trail system of the site. Two workshops on the identification and removal of these invasive species will be provided for local landowners.

Riverwood Carolinian & Woodland Teaching Garden - Addresses habitat restoration and revitalization by applying an integrated approach to managing invasives while increasing the biodiversity of a degraded area. Invasive species will be removed from the area, followed by the planting of over 850 trees and shrubs and 2,250 herbaceous plants.

The Edible Campus Garden - A continuation of the organization's transformation of underutilized concrete space on the McGill University Campus and Santropol Roulant site into productive food gardens. Workshops and other public participation opportunities will be provided to encourage experimentation with urban agriculture in public or private spaces.

Three different types of workshops will be held: for urban residents, rural residents and schools.

Muskoday Clan Mothers Memorial Parks - The goal of this project is to restore the connection between the local community and the natural environment and to foster an appreciation and respect by creating a series of green public gathering spaces. Okotoks River Valley Committee - Okotoks, AB
Okotoks Natural Parkland Reforestation and Community Xeriscape Demonstration - This project will be developed on 2 sites: Natural Parkland Zone and the Community Xeriscape Site. Approximately 3,000 native seedlings will be planted with the addition of educational signage, planting beds and a retaining wall.
Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society - Chilliwack, BC
Inerpretive Trail & Road Restoration Project - The restoration of a damaged area and creation of an educational walking path. A "bird blind" will be constructed through the forested area to include educational materials and a peek into the cattail marsh.
Northeast Avalon ACAP - St. John's, NL
Engaging Community in Watershed Appreciation & Restoration - The main issue being addressed by this project is the stabilization of local stream banks to ensure a healthier river system. Trees and shrubs will be planted to prevent erosion and to provide nutrients and shade for the aquatic organisms that live in the river.
Foodcycles - Toronto, ON
Soil-utions for Farm, Food and Community - The focus of this year's project is on increasing the capacity of the vermi-composting and composting systems. The project will include the construction of a bicycle powered shredder that will process food waste into smaller pieces. This will enable Foodcycles to grow more food and create more soil for the greenhouse at the Downsview Park site.
Gary Oak Ecosystem Recovery Team Society - Victoria, BC
Bring Back the Bluebirds - The primary goal of this project is to develop a nest box system for the region's bluebird population which was extirpated in 1995. Nest boxes will be established to ensure adequate habitat is available for the bluebird population to grow.
Glooscap Heritage Centre & Mi'kmaq Musem - Millbrook First Nation Reserve, NS
Glooscap Heritage Centre & Mi'kmaq Museum Beautification Project - This project seeks to develop an outdoor extension of the Heritage Centre by increasing the educational capacity of the centre and the local community's capacity for environmental stewardship. Reforestation of the centre's outdoor area is planned using traditional Mi'kmaq plants. A shed will be constructed for tools and to showcase educational signage.
EcoSource Mississauga - Mississauga, ON
Generation Garden Organic Community Garden Project - EcoSource has been working with the City of Mississauga to develop publicly accessible garden spaces for community members in the area. The Generation Garden project offers a unique opportunity to provide the community with intergenerational learning experiences. The project will include the development of the food garden as well as the construction of a fence, garden shed, and raised beds.
Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF) - Toronto, ON
LEAF Learning Garden - This garden is a demonstration area featuring plantings grown using various organic gardening principles. The garden is cared for by community stewards using organic techniques, and is designed as a welcoming space to inspire others to create similar habitat gardens in their own yards following the same principles.
Olds Community Garden Guild - Olds, AB
Olds Community Garden - This will be the first community garden in the Mountain View County of Alberta. The project will include a living fence, construction of raised beds and rain barrel installation. A portion of each harvest will be donated to the local food bank.
School District No. 36 Community-Schools Partnership - Surrey, BC
Hawthorne Park Restoration & Enhancement Project - A partnership between a small inner-city school with the community and the City of Surrey to restore and enhance the natural habitat of Hawthorne Park. The project will involve as many students as possible to participate in activities including bird and bat box construction, tree and shrub plantings, and park clean-ups.
Community Forests International - Sackville, NB
A Living Space: Belonging to the Land - The goal of this project is to build a 3-season structure to house future native gardening workshops. The structure will feature a green roof, living walls, rammed earth, a composting toilet and solar array. CFI will use this "living space" to demonstrate how innovative, low-impact green building techniques can be used to reduce human impact on an environment. Community members are encouraged to help with the building's development.
Sudbury Ward One Community Action Network (CAN) - Sudbury, ON
Ward One Community Garden - This project will focus on the conversion of 500 square metres of lawn into a community food garden. The garden will educate and promote the use of local and heritage seeds, and the importance of biodiversity in the community's environment.
Action Saint-Francois - Sherbrooke, QC
Aménagement d'un Habitat Faunique pour les Pollinisateurs - This project will focus on increasing the amount of green space in the Marie-Médatrice Park, located in the middle of a residential neighbourhood. Community members and school groups will be invited to various workshops on biodiversity, planting events and bee hive construction.
Pro-Vert - Montréal, QC
Découvrons la flore du Sud-Ouest - The development of an arboretum in the Saint-Henri neighbourhood to educate the community on the importance of native green space in addition to reducing the heat island effect in the area. Signage, a path, benches and a fence will be constructed to facilitate the site's capacity to host various schools and community groups for events, and educational opportunities.
University of Saskatchewan - Saskatoon, SK
Prairie Habitat Garden - The goal of this project is to develop a garden to educate and motivate the community to promote natural gardens across the prairies. This garden will provide teachers with resources for curriculum development and for students to take an active role in increasing environmental sustainability in their communities.

Durham Children’s Groundwater Festival - Oshawa, ON
2010 Durham Children’s Groundwater Festival - To date the festival has seen over 44,660 grade 4 students and 4,400 secondary school volunteers participate. All activities are designed to complement Ontario curriculum expectations. Classroom materials are provided for teachers to help reinforce the message throughout the year and to continue to raise awareness of water issues.
The Grey Bruce Children’s Water Festival - Owen Sound, ON
2010 Grey Bruce Children’s Water Festival - Students are provided with the opportunity to learn about conservation, protection and the efficient use of water and water sources through participation in 45 interactive activity centres over the course of four days. 2010 will be the 10th anniversary of the festival!
B.C. Wildlife Federation - Burnaby, BC
Wetlands Education Program - In 2010 BCWF will offer the Puddle Project and Wetland Restoration workshops to community members to provide education on wetland restoration and for the development of stewardship skills. Community members participating in the workshops will spend 30% of the time in-class learning about wetland hydrology and 70% of the time in the field conducting water quality testing, planting native species and removing waste from the wetland.
The Alberta Lake Management Society - Edmonton, AB
Lake Management Framework for Alberta - The ALMS will produce a guidance document for lake stewardship groups in Alberta. The guidelines will be developed through workshops with community groups and lake managers in Alberta to ensure that the information included is relevant to groups across Alberta working on water stewardship projects.
