Walmart Canada

Walmart logoWalmart is proud to support the Walmart–Evergreen Green Grants program—the largest community greening program of its kind in Canada. From restoring habitat for wildlife to building a shared food garden, Green Grants are transforming neglected urban spaces into vibrant, healthy landscapes. Together we’re helping local groups bring nature to their city or town, right across Canada.

Walmart has committed $2.5 million over five years to Evergreen to help green communities across the country through the program. To date, 319 local community organizations have received a Green Grant and 20,000 people like you have volunteered to make it happen!

At Walmart Canada, CSR has become part of our DNA. Ultimately, a commitment to responsible business practices helps us do what we do best—save Canadians money so they can live better. Headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, Walmart Canada operates 321 retail outlets nationwide and serves more than one million customers daily. The company's vision is to demonstrate environmental leadership by reducing the ecological impact of its operations through company-wide programs focused on waste, energy and products, as well as outreach programs that preserve and enhance local environments. Walmart’s global goal is to generate zero waste, to be powered 100 percent by renewable energy and to sell products that sustain people and the environment.

Some of Walmart’s key sustainability accomplishments:

  • Walmart Canada has begun using tree-friendly fibres certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for all its national free standing inserts.
  • The Product Sustainability Index is a comprehensive program to ultimately develop a customer-friendly ‘green’ ratings system to apply to every product in Walmart Canada stores.
  • As its food business continues to grow, Walmart Canada is taking leadership regarding sustainable food practices, having launched a Sustainable Seafood Policy and introduced four new Sustainable Agriculture Commitments.

Save Our Seine River Environment

Save Our Seine River Environment Inc. was established in 1990 by concerned residents to protect, preserve and enhance the Seine River Greenway in Winnipeg. In 2008, the Save Our Seine River Environment group was one of 65 national community organizations to receive a Walmart-Evergreen Green Grant.

Community volunteers and Walmart Associates pitch in at the Save Our Seine project

To help the group reach their goals of stabilizing portions of the river bank, creating a buffer zone to decrease pollutants and run-off into the waterway, and enhancing shoreline vegetation, the group was awarded a Green Grant of $8,000. This funding helped SOS reach out to community members to drive participation in restoring and repairing features of the river, and the group delivered three highly successful planting events in the Summer of 2008 which engaged over 100 public volunteers including six Associates from the local Walmart store. In total over 500 trees were planted!

"We very much appreciate the cooperation of Tatiana and others at the St. Vital Centre Walmart store for getting their staff to participate in the event."

SOS members were pleased with the results and were delighted that the work done that summer would help to improve water levels in the Seine, regulate the flow and improve water quality, and had raised overall awareness among local residents about the importance of the river as a resource for wildlife and recreation.
