Fido and Evergreen: Working Together for the Environment

Since 2009, Fido has been a proud supporter of Evergreen's community greening programs, helping to bring nature back to school grounds, parks and other public spaces in communities across Canada. With Fido’s support, Evergreen has:

• Planted nearly 50,000 trees and shrubs across Canada
• Engaged over 34,000 volunteers
• Delivered  over 475 community greening events and workshops
• Supported school ground greening projects at 260 schools

Share Your Care

Fido and Evergreen launched Share Your Care™ in 2011. In its inaugural year, Share Your Care provided $100,000 in funding to 20 environmental and community projects across Canada. Canadians were invited to get involved by casting their vote for their favourite project. All groups received financial support, but the three groups with the most votes received additional funds. ReForest London’s Million Tree Challenge, with the greatest number of votes, received $27,500 from Share Your Care towards their project of engaging citizens in planting one million trees over the next 10 years.

Quick Start Grants

2011 also saw the introduction of the Fido-Evergreen Quick Start Grant Program—a national grant program that supports local efforts to create greener, healthier communities. In 2011, Quick Start Grants provided funds of $1,000–$2,000 to 35 local groups to support projects ranging from environmental stewardship and restoration to community gardening.

The Fido Classroom at Evergreen Brick Works

In recognition of Fido’s generous support to Evergreen Brick Works, we have designated our teaching kitchen the Fido Classroom. This classroom is host to many groups and programs throughout the year including school visits, summer camps, volunteer, food workshops and cooking classes. The Fido Classroom at Evergreen Brick Works has become an important educational space for people of all ages.

Fido’s Environmental Initiatives

In addition to partnering with Evergreen, Fido is committed to helping the environment by undertaking initiatives such as these outlined below, to reduce, reuse and recycle. So far Fido has:

• Worked to lower energy and resource consumption through waste reduction and recycling programs
• Introduced a phone-recycling program called Phones for Food that has diverted over 500,000 phones from landfills while raising over $750,000 for food banks
• Implemented initiatives to reduce their impact on forests by reducing our use of paper. Since 2008, these efforts have helped save over 308 tonnes of paper
